Emollients
Emollients soften the skin, preventing dryness. Most emollients are made from petrochemicals and can cause skin irritation whereas natural emollients are actually beneficial and nourish the skin, like evening primrose, base carrier oils and cocoa or shea butter. An emollient is best described as a "moisturiser" (something that adds moisture).

Natural Soaps
- True and natural soaps are referred to as castile, marseille-style soap or even real soap, they are made from the combination of oils, of either plant or animal origin, and alkali. Many so-called "organic soaps" and "organic shampoos" are actually made from non-organic synthetic oleo chemical or petrochemical detergents.
- Natural soaps are best if made from any combination of the following vegetable oils, preferably certified organic:
- Almond
- Cocoa butter
- Coconut oil
- Hemp seed
- Jojoba

Extenders & Solvents
- The most natural solvent in the world is H2O, water. From the earliest of times, we have used water to make soups and teas from plants. As civilization progressed, people quickly learned that they could make a greater diversity of medicines by infusing their plants in fermented spirits and the herbal extracts would remain potent, unrefrigerated, for a much longer period of time. Thousands of years later, the finest and most effective natural herbal extracts are still made as simple teas and infusions in organic spirits (organic grain/grape/potato alcohol).
Todau, many companies choose to use cheaper, toxic synthetic solvents to extract more of the herb's phytochemicals, more quickly. Unfortunately, using chemical solvents is not without risk of chemical residue being left in the final product. It is for this reason that Certified Organic Ingredients are by far superior in quality and potency to standard farming practices today. Some of the more common chemical solvents such as hexane, acetone and methanol are not only toxic to handle and to ingest (neurotoxins and pulmonary irritants), they are also hazardous to the environment in their manufacture.
- Choose organic, chemical-free or bio-dynamic products wherever possible.
Chemical Solvents:
- Acetic acid
Acetone Amyl alcohol Benzene Butylene glycol Ethyl alcohol, synthetic Ethyl butyl acetate Ether Ethylene glycol monophenyl-ether (phenoxyethanol) - Glycerine, synthetic form
Isopropyl alcohol Hexane Methanol Phenol Propyl alcohol Propylene glycol SD alcohols

Thickeners & Stablizers
- Over the years, clever marketers have persuaded the public to believe that thicker products mean richer, more luxurious products. The truth is that the thickness or thinness (viscosity) of a product has nothing to do with the quality of the product. On occasion, the use of a thickener may help to stabilise an emulsion.
Natural Thickeners
- Natural or organic thickeners may be botanical or mineral in origin.
- Guar gum
- Acacia gum
- Clay minerals
- Soy protein
Vegetable cellulose Wheat protein Xanthan gum
Synthetic Thickeners
- Carbomer
Cocamide DEA, MEA Hydrolyzed wheat protein Hyrdoxymethyl cellulose Hydroxypropyl cellulose Methacryloyl ethyl betaine Methacrylates copolymer Potassium carbomer Potassium stearate Quinoa protein

Emulsifiers
- Emulsifiers are two or more compounds that allow water and oil to mix (which is called an emulsion). These are usually petroleum derivatives and can be allergens. Natural emulsifiers are obtained from various natural sources, including beeswax and decyl polyglucoside which is derived from sugarcane. Emulsifiers modify the interface between water and oils, allowing tiny blobs of oils and waxes to float freely in water without merging together and separating out.
Natural Emulsifiers
- Lecithin
- Vegetable Glycerine
- Soya Lecithin
- Shea Butter
Synthetic Emulsifiers
- Acetylated lanolin alcohol
Alkyl polyglycoside Betaine Carbomer Carboxymethyl cellulose Cetearyl alcohol Cocamidopropyl betaine (coco betaine) Ethyl acetate - Ethylene glycol distearate
- Fatty acid alkanolamide

The Preservative Issue
Products need preservatives to maintain product stability, not only to extend the shelf life, but to help prevent the growth of harmful bacteria. Preservatives are often used in less then 1% of a product, but it is the paraben family of preservatives (methyl paraben, propyl paraben, butyl paraben, ethyl paraben) that are most harmfull, they are well known to cause skin irritation - synthetic preservatives are often unhealthy and many cause skin problems.
- Certified organic essential oils and herbal extracts can be used as part of a truly natural preservative system, however, they are much more costly than petrochemicals. The benefits of real botanicals is that our bodies recognise and can process them safely as they are substances that we have evolved with over millions of years. Chemical preservatives, on the other hand, are not without harm to humans and wildlife in their manufacture and when they are rubbed into the body they are absorbed and are known to cause harmful side effects. Synthetic preservatives are considered by leading dermatological associations to be the number one cause of contact dermatitis.
- Amina Cosmetics, Pure Earth and Essenza Pura product ranges use natural botanic based preservatives such as essential oils, herabl extracts and vitamins.
